Do over the counter skin care products work?

Over the last few years at has become increasingly difficult to buy a face cream. A huge array of new and ground breaking creams are available that promise to do wonders for your skin. Some will stop spots, some are able to fade away pigmentation and others will make you look younger.

Evolving skin care means, the list of active ingredient is endless, there are lists of ‘nasty’ ingredients to look out for and with  flawless marketing we are coerced into buying products with an eye-watering price tag.

The questions we should ask is: do these over the counter skin care products actually work? I want to help you make an informed decision when you next purchase your cream.

Things to bear in mind:

  • What is the level of active ingredient? If it is on the last line on the ingredient list you know there is minimal amount in it.
  • How do the active ingredients absorb into the skin?
  • What else is in the cream? This one is the tricky one, unless we all go and do a crash course in cosmetic chemistry it is near to impossible to know the source or the quality of the ingredients.
  • The most important thing to think about is “Is cream going to be what my skin wants?” we are now self prescribing too often and that can be damaging for the skin.

The bottom line is… buying a skin care cream today is a minefield. Even with our in depth knowledge, we would struggle to know what we are truly buying.

Next time you are at a counter, shop or chemist please do not be fooled into thinking these product are going to

  • Stop your spots
  • Remove your pigment
  • Or make you look ten years younger!

IF ALL THESE PRODUCTS WORKED SO WELL, WHY DO WE STILL GET SPOTS, AGE AND SEE PEOPLE WITH PIGMENTATION?

My advice is, if your skin is not an issue for you but you like to look after it, then buy a cream you can afford, lower your expectations and it will be worth it.

If you have a skin issue or skin problem then you should go and see a skin specialist that sells a professional skin care. They will work with you to help you understand your skin and find the correct way to treat it. When it comes to skin there are no quick fixes and no way is there a blanket approach to products.

If your skin bothers you then let us advise you on your skin or we are happy to put you in contact with your closest specialist.
